Application Overview

This is an early snapshot of our view of the domain. The interested reader can see how our ideas developed by downloading the final report.

Description

The scenario as described in the ITT suggests that the academic is the central actor. However the scenario is based around a job application, and as such we must consider that process. This leads us to the view that actually it is the employer who drives the process. They will in future, as they do now, demand that applicants conform to their (fairly rigid) applications process. This will certainly require the applicant to complete standard forms (often online), which enable the HR department to capture the necessary information, and ensure that applicant information can be presented to appointing staff in a uniform format.

This has led us to consider just what 'form' the application forms will take, and how much verification they will do automatically. Just as it is normal for online forms today to use Javascript to validate information you have typed in, so dedicated HR systems may provide forms which can verify information provided by candidates. An obvious example is to verify that the candidate has the degree they claim to have, and that it is from the institution they claim. This is turn leads us to consider the role that meta-data might play, and in particular HR-XML. Some of our initial ideas are captured in the diagram below.
